This Week in 1836

Sam Houston was in Refugio

In December the Texians had won a major battle over Mexico at the Alamo and in the exuberance of their victory celebration a plan was devised to stage a military expedition to Matamoras, where, it was felt, the Mexicans could be defeated once and for all.

Commander-in-Chief of the Texian army Sam Houston journeyed to Refugio in an attempt to ward off the expedition.  He thought he failed and returned to Washington-on-the-Brazos, as a delegate from Refugio, where a convention was declaring independence from Mexico.  But Houston's magnetic personality had convinced enough of the Texians not to continue to Matamoras.

Meanwhile, General Santa Anna had laid siege to the Alamo.  And we know what followed.

On Houston's 43rd birthday, March 3, 1836, the new Constitution of the Republic of Texas was officially signed.
